Palliative care is probably the most misunderstood part of medicine. It does not mean stopping treatment, giving up, or hastening anything. It means changing the goal: when cure is no longer possible, relieving, settling and preserving dignity become the treatment.
Nor does it begin in the final days. Introduced early, alongside treatment, it improves comfort and often the quality of the time that remains. It concerns the family accompanying the patient as much as the patient.
